One city, two continents — and one guide to plan it

Planning Istanbul well is simple: stay near the sights or the T1 tram, give the old city one full day and the Bosphorus another, and avoid museum closing days. That way you see the essentials in three days, or enjoy the city without rushing in five to seven.

Why Istanbul?

Istanbul is Türkiye's main gateway. According to Anadolu Agency, the city welcomed 16.01 million foreign visitors between January and October 2025 — about 33.9% of all foreign arrivals to Türkiye in that period.

Best time to visit

  • Spring (Apr–May): the loveliest season, with the Emirgan tulip festival in April.
  • Summer (Jun–Aug): hot and busy; book hotels early.
  • Autumn (Sep–Oct): pleasant weather, warm sea, calmer prices.
  • Winter (Nov–Mar): rain and mild cold, but the lowest hotel rates.

Where to stay

For a short first visit, Sultanahmet or Sirkeci put the sights within walking distance. Taksim and Şişli suit shoppers and night owls, and Bosphorus hotels in Beşiktaş suit families and couples. Full comparison in the best areas to stay in Istanbul; book through our hotel service.

Getting around

Istanbul Airport (IST) is 40–50 km from the centre; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side. Metro, Havaist buses, taxis and private transfers are compared in our Istanbul airport and transport guide. In the city, an Istanbulkart covers trams, metro and ferries.

How many days?

  • 3 days: old city, Bosphorus and Galata, plus the Asian side or the Grand Bazaar.
  • 5 days: add the Princes' Islands and a shopping or theme-park day.
  • 7 days: add a day trip to Sapanca or Bursa — see our 7-day family itinerary.

Food and shopping

The vast majority of restaurants serve halal food. Try kebab, İskender and pide, fish sandwiches in Eminönü, and baklava in Karaköy. Shop at the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar, İstiklal Avenue, Nişantaşı and the big malls. More in our Turkish cuisine guide.

Day trips and honeymoons

Sapanca's lake and wooden chalets, Bursa and Mount Uludağ, and Şile on the Black Sea all work as day trips — see the best Istanbul tours and day trips. Couples should read our Istanbul honeymoon guide.
