Quick answer
The Princes' Islands sit in the Sea of Marmara off Istanbul and are car-free. Ferries leave from Kabataş, Eminönü and Bostancı. The best known is Büyükada with its timber mansions and the Aya Yorgi hilltop, followed by quieter Heybeliada.
What are the Princes' Islands?
Named after Byzantine princes exiled here, they later became the summer retreat of Istanbul's wealthy families. Today they are one of the best things to do in Istanbul for sea air in a single day. The four most visited inhabited islands are Büyükada, Heybeliada, Burgazada and Kınalıada.
Getting there
- European side: city ferries from Kabataş and Eminönü.
- Asian side: from Bostancı — a shorter crossing.
- Tip: avoid summer weekends, when ferries are packed.

Büyükada
Walk among old wooden mansions, then climb to Aya Yorgi, the hilltop monastery and church with panoramic views over the islands. Rent a bike or use the electric shuttles; swim at small beaches in summer.
Heybeliada
Pine forests, colourful houses and calm streets — ideal for walking and cycling away from the crowds.

Best time & tips
Spring, early summer and early autumn. Wear comfortable shoes (it's hilly), carry water, and check the last return ferry.
