Schengen Visa Requirements from Türkiye by Employment Status: Employees, Business Owners, Students, Retirees, Homemakers and Minors

The documents every Schengen applicant in Türkiye needs, then what each employment status adds: an employer letter, payslips and social-security record for employees; tax and trade-registry papers for business owners; a student certificate and parental sponsorship; retirement papers; spousal sponsorship for homemakers; and notarised parental consent for minors.

Quick answer

A Schengen file from Türkiye has two parts: common documents for every applicant (form, photo, passport, travel insurance with at least €30,000 cover, bookings, bank statement, family registry extract), and documents proving your employment status and ties to Türkiye: employees with an employer letter, payslips and social-security record; business owners with tax and trade-registry papers; students with a student certificate and parental sponsorship; retirees with a pension certificate; homemakers with spousal sponsorship; and minors with notarised parental consent. The most common reasons for refusal: a missing document for your status, or an unconvincing bank statement.

Common documentsSix employment situationsMistakes that sink a file

Many of the Schengen refusals we see aren't caused by nationality or country, but by a document related to employment status that wasn't submitted, or was submitted in a way that didn't convince the consulate. Published document lists are usually general, but the consulate reads your file according to who you are: an employee, a business owner, a student, a retiree. In this guide we set out what's needed for each case, as we prepare it for our clients in Istanbul. Choosing the consulate, the bank balance and appointments are covered in our complete Schengen visa guide.

Common documents for all applicants

DocumentDetails
Application formComplete and signed, with details matching the passport
Biometric photoRecent, light background, face clearly visible
PassportIssued within the last ten years, valid at least three months after leaving the Schengen area, with at least two blank pages, plus any old passports
Travel insuranceCovering the whole trip and all Schengen countries, with medical cover of at least €30,000
Flight and accommodation bookingsReturn flights, and hotels or an invitation showing where you'll stay
Bank statementUsually for the last three months, stamped by the bank or issued electronically
Family registry extractTam vukuatlı nüfus kayıt örneği for Turkish citizens, or the equivalent for foreign residents
Turkish residence permitFor non-Turks: valid for long enough after the return date
Consulates differ in the details

The list above is the core that most consulates require, but each country and visa centre has its own exact list and may ask for translations or originals of some documents. We match your file to the list of the consulate you'll apply to before the appointment.

Which consulate, and when to apply?

RuleDetails
The country you apply toWhere you'll spend the longest; if the stays are equal, the country of first entry
Earliest you can applySix months before travel
Latest sensible dateAt least fifteen days before travel
Decision timeFifteen calendar days as standard, extendable to forty-five in special cases

In summer and around Eid, appointments at visa centres in Istanbul and Ankara fill up, so book early. Applying to a country that isn't your main destination because its appointment comes sooner is a mistake that can get the file refused or cause problems on future trips.

Where to get each Turkish document

DocumentWhere from
Family registry extract (tam vukuatlı nüfus kayıt örneği)The e-Government portal (e-Devlet) or the civil registry office
Social-security record (SGK hizmet dökümü)The e-Government portal
Student certificate (öğrenci belgesi)The e-Government portal or the university
Retirement certificate and pension statementThe e-Government portal or the Social Security Institution
Tax certificate (vergi levhası)The tax office or its online service
Trade-registry gazetteThe official Trade Registry Gazette archive
Activity certificate (faaliyet belgesi)The chamber of commerce or industry you're registered with
Signature circular and parental consentA notary (noter)
Bank statementThe bank or its app, stamped or e-signed

Many of these documents are downloaded in minutes from the e-Government portal with a verification code, which consulates prefer. Get them a few days before the appointment so they're recent.

Employees

Employer letter

On letterhead, signed and stamped: position, start date, salary and approval of leave for your travel dates.

Payslips

For the last three months (maaş bordrosu), matching what goes into your bank account.

Social-security record

Your service record with the Social Security Institution (SGK hizmet dökümü) from the e-Government portal, proving you're really registered.

Company documents

Some consulates ask for the company's tax certificate or trade-registry gazette, so ask HR for them in advance.

Tip: a letter that doesn't mention approved leave, or a salary that doesn't show up in your bank statement, weakens the file. If you've only recently started the job, explain it — the consulate is looking for a stable tie to your work.

Business owners

DocumentNote
Tax certificate (vergi levhası)Recent
Trade-registry gazette (ticaret sicil gazetesi)Proves partnership or ownership
Activity certificate (faaliyet belgesi)From the chamber of commerce or industry, recently issued
Signature circular (imza sirküleri)Proves your authority in the company
Company bank statementFor recent months, showing real activity
Personal bank statementShows you can cover the trip

If the trip is for business, add the European company's invitation and a clear purpose. Organise the company file so the consular officer can see your connection to it and the size of its activity within a minute.

Self-employed professionals and tradespeople

A doctor with a private clinic, a lawyer, or a tradesperson registered with the chamber of craftsmen submits the tax certificate, proof of registration with their professional body or chamber, and a bank statement showing regular income. The clearer your tie to your work in Türkiye, the stronger the file.

Students

Student certificate

Recent, from the university or school (öğrenci belgesi), issued online.

Sponsorship letter

From the parents or sponsor, undertaking to cover the trip's costs.

The sponsor's documents

Their employment documents according to their status (employee or business owner) and bank statements.

Proof of relationship

A family registry extract proving the relationship to the sponsor.

If your trip is during the academic holidays, say so — returning to your studies is a strong tie.

Retirees

The retirement certificate or pension statement from the Social Security Institution, a bank statement showing the pension arriving regularly, and any property or savings that support the file. A retiree's ties to Türkiye are shown through the pension, home and family, so make that clear.

Homemakers and those not working

The key here is the sponsor: a sponsorship letter from the spouse or a family member, with their employment documents and bank statement, and proof of the relationship through the marriage certificate or family registry extract. It helps if the couple travel together or the trip has a clear purpose and length.

Minors

  1. 1
    Parental consent

If travelling with only one parent: notarised consent from the other parent (muvafakatname) with a copy of their ID.

  2. 2
If travelling with someone other than the parents

Notarised consent from both parents, and the companion's details.

  3. 3
    Proof of relationship

A family registry extract or birth certificate.

  4. 4
    Financial documents

The sponsors' (parents') documents and bank statements.

  5. 5
    School certificate

A recent student certificate for school-age children.

Foreign residents of Türkiye

Arabs living in Türkiye on a regular residence permit (work, family, student, tourist) submit the same documents according to their employment status and add a Turkish residence permit valid for long enough after the return. The consulate looks at your ties to Türkiye: work, home, family and how long you've lived here. Someone holding temporary protection only needs a special assessment, as it isn't regular residence in the sense consulates require. The common reasons for refusal and how to avoid them are in our guide to Schengen refusal reasons.

Family visits or an invitation from Europe

If you'll stay with a relative or friend in Europe, the invitation is a key part of the file, and each country has its own official form:

CountryCommon invitation documentNote
GermanyA formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) made by the host at the foreigners' authorityProves the host covers the visitor's costs
FranceA certificate of accommodation (attestation d'accueil) validated by the host at the town hallFor staying with someone in France
ItalyA hospitality declaration from the host with a copy of their residence permit or IDDetails depend on the consulate
Other countriesAn invitation letter with the host's ID or residence permit and addressWe match the format to the consulate

You still need to submit your employment-status documents — an invitation doesn't replace proof of your ties to Türkiye.

Business trips and trade fairs

Add to your employment-status documents: the European company's invitation with the purpose, dates and who covers the costs, and a letter from your company in Türkiye stating your position and the reason for the trip, plus proof of registration if it's a trade fair. Regular, documented business trips build a travel history that helps you get longer visas later.

The cover letter: one page that explains your file

  1. 1
    Who you are

Your name, employment status, how long you've worked or studied, and where you live in Türkiye.

  2. 2
    Why you're travelling

The purpose, clearly: tourism, visiting a relative, business, a trade fair, medical treatment.

  3. 3
    Itinerary

The cities, dates and the main country where you'll spend the longest.

  4. 4
    Who pays

You, your sponsor or the inviting party.

  5. 5
    Why you'll come back

Your job, studies, family, home and any other tie to Türkiye.

A cover letter isn't required by every consulate, but it saves the officer time reading your file, especially in unusual cases like self-employment or a recent job change.

Translations and originals

Many consulates in Türkiye accept official Turkish documents in Turkish, while some ask for translations into English or the country's language for specific documents. Documents issued outside Türkiye, such as birth or marriage certificates from your home country, usually need a certified translation. Bring the originals to the appointment if they're requested; we provide certified translation through our translation service.

Frequent travellers and longer visas

Anyone who has obtained Schengen visas and used them correctly in recent years may be granted multiple-entry visas with longer validity, under the European rules governing this and at the consulate's discretion. So on every trip, keep to the duration and the main country — your record is the strongest document in your next file.

Cases we see often

Composite examples based on questions we receive, not the stories of specific clients.

An employee at a private company for six months

Her job is recent, so we strengthened the file with a detailed employer letter, the social-security record, a regular bank statement and a cover letter explaining the short trip.

A restaurant owner in Fatih

He submitted the tax certificate, trade registry, activity certificate and statements for the restaurant and his personal account, and his real business came through clearly.

A resident couple visiting their son in Germany

The son made the formal obligation letter, the father submitted his retirement documents, and the mother was sponsored by her husband with proof of the relationship.

A university student in Istanbul

A recent student certificate and his father's sponsorship with his employment documents, with the trip in the summer holidays.

Quick table: what each status adds

Your statusThe most important extra documents
EmployeeEmployer letter with leave approval, payslips, social-security record
Business ownerTax certificate, trade-registry gazette, activity certificate, signature circular, company statements
Self-employed or tradespersonTax certificate, registration with the professional body or chamber
StudentStudent certificate, parental sponsorship and their documents
RetireeRetirement certificate and pension statement
Homemaker or not workingSponsorship by the spouse or family, the sponsor's documents and proof of relationship
MinorNotarised parental consent, proof of relationship and the sponsor's documents
Foreign residentA valid Turkish residence permit, then the documents for their employment status

The bank statement: what does the consulate look at?

A convincing statement

  • Regular activity over recent months
  • Income that matches the stated salary or business
  • A balance that reasonably covers the trip
  • In the name of the applicant or a documented sponsor
  • Recently issued, stamped or electronic from the bank

A statement that raises doubts

  • A large sudden deposit days before applying
  • A new account with no history
  • A balance inconsistent with declared income
  • A statement with missing pages
  • Money borrowed for the file

Mistakes we see in Schengen files from Türkiye

Do

  • Match every detail on the form to the passport and documents
  • Submit a document that proves everything you write
  • Order the file the way the consulate wants
  • Book accommodation consistent with your itinerary
  • Start well before you travel

Avoid

  • An employer letter without leave approval
  • Insurance that doesn't cover the whole period or all countries
  • A passport about to expire
  • Fake bookings cancelled straight after applying
  • Applying to a consulate that isn't your main destination

After it's issued: check the visa before celebrating

Dates

The start and end of validity, and whether they cover your whole trip.

Number of days

The duration of stay: the number of days allowed inside the Schengen area.

Number of entries

Single, double or multiple — leaving for a non-Schengen country on a single-entry visa ends it.

Territorial validity

Valid for all Schengen states or only specific ones.

Personal details

Your name and passport number must match exactly.

If you find an error in the details, contact the consulate straight away before you travel — not at the border.

Frequently asked questions

What documents does every Schengen applicant in Türkiye need?

The application form, a recent biometric photo, a passport issued within the last ten years, valid at least three months after leaving the Schengen area and with two blank pages, travel insurance with at least €30,000 cover, flight and accommodation bookings, a bank statement, and a full family registry extract (tam vukuatlı nüfus kayıt örneği), then the documents for your employment status.

What does an employee submit?

A letter from the employer stating the position, start date, salary and approval of leave, payslips for the last three months, the social-security service record (SGK hizmet dökümü), and sometimes company documents such as the tax certificate and trade-registry gazette.

What does a business owner submit?

The tax certificate (vergi levhası), the trade-registry gazette (ticaret sicil gazetesi), a recent activity certificate from the chamber (faaliyet belgesi), the signature circular (imza sirküleri), and statements for the company and personal accounts.

What does a student submit?

A recent student certificate (öğrenci belgesi), a sponsorship letter from the parents or sponsor with their employment documents and bank statements, and a family registry extract proving the relationship.

Does a homemaker need a sponsor?

Usually yes: a sponsorship letter from the spouse with their employment documents and bank statements, and a family registry extract or marriage certificate proving the relationship.

What does a minor travelling with only one parent need?

Notarised consent from the parent who isn't travelling (muvafakatname), with a copy of their ID, and a family registry extract, plus the sponsor's financial documents.

Can a foreign resident of Türkiye apply for Schengen?

Yes, if their regular Turkish residence permit is valid for long enough after the return date, submitting the same documents according to their employment status. Someone with temporary protection only needs a special assessment, as it isn't regular residence.

When should I apply for a Schengen visa?

You can apply up to six months before travel, and preferably no later than fifteen days before. In summer and holiday seasons, book the appointment very early because the centres get crowded.

Which consulate do I apply to if I'm visiting several countries?

The country where you'll spend the longest; if the stays are equal, the country of first entry.

Where do I get the social-security record and family registry extract?

From Türkiye's e-Government portal (e-Devlet) in minutes, with a verification code that consulates prefer. Download them a few days before the appointment so they're recent.

What is the German formal obligation letter?

A formal undertaking (Verpflichtungserklärung) made by the host living in Germany at the foreigners' authority, accepting responsibility for the visitor's costs. It's one of the strongest documents for a family visit to Germany.

Do I need a cover letter?

Not every consulate requires one, but it's very useful for explaining unusual situations such as self-employment, a recent job change or a multi-country trip.

Are Turkish documents accepted without translation?

Many consulates in Türkiye accept official Turkish documents in Turkish, while some ask for translations of specific ones. Documents issued outside Türkiye usually need a certified translation.

How much money should be in the bank?

There's no single figure for all countries — each has its own daily estimate. What matters most is a regular statement that reflects your real income, not a sudden deposit just before applying. We review your statement before you apply.
