Turkey: Where Your Money Goes Further
Turkey consistently ranks as one of the world's best-value travel destinations. A combination of affordable accommodation, cheap and efficient transport, delicious street food, and mostly free or low-cost attractions means a week of genuine adventure is achievable for around $500. Here's how.
Accommodation: Sleep Well, Spend Less
- Hostels: Dorm beds in Istanbul, Cappadocia, or Antalya: $10–20/night. Ideal for solo travellers and meeting other visitors
- Guesthouses (Pansiyon): Family-run guesthouses offer private rooms for $25–50/night with breakfast often included
- Apps: Use Booking.com, Hostelworld, or local site Tatilbudur for the best deals
- Tip: In smaller towns and off-season, prices drop significantly — negotiate directly with owners
Food: Eat Incredibly Well for Almost Nothing
Turkish street food and local restaurant culture makes eating well on a budget remarkably easy.
- Döner: A full kebab sandwich costs $1.50–3 and is often a complete meal
- Simit: The sesame bread ring is the perfect 50-cent breakfast
- Lokanta: A traditional working-man's cafeteria serves a full hot lunch (soup, main, salad, bread) for $4–6
- Balık Ekmek: Grilled fish sandwiches at Istanbul's Galata Bridge: $3–4
- Tea: A glass of çay is virtually free everywhere — 20–50 cents
Transport: Cheap, Reliable, Everywhere
- Inter-city Buses: Turkey's Kamil Koç, Metro Turizm, and FlixBus connect every major city cheaply. Istanbul to Cappadocia overnight: ~$20
- Domestic Flights: Pegasus and AnadoluJet regularly offer fares under $30 between cities if booked in advance
- City Transport: Istanbul's metro, tram, and ferry network is excellent — an İstanbulkart loaded with credit is all you need
- Dolmuş (Shared Minibus): The backbone of local transport outside cities — incredibly cheap and goes almost everywhere
Attractions: Often Free or Very Cheap
- Mosques: Entry to most mosques, including the Blue Mosque, is free
- Natural Sites: Cappadocia valleys, coastal paths, and national parks cost little or nothing to explore
- Museum Pass Turkey: The Museum Pass covers major sites across Turkey for ~$25 — excellent value if you plan to visit several museums
- Free Views: Istanbul's Golden Horn sunset from Galata Bridge, Bosphorus shore walks, and Balat street photography cost nothing
