South Korea Visa from Türkiye and the K-ETA: Who Enters Visa-Free, Who Needs an Embassy Visa, and How to Prepare Your Trip

A guide to travelling to South Korea from Türkiye: Turkish and Gulf citizens enter visa-free but need the electronic K-ETA, valid for three years, while others need a short-stay visa from the Korean embassy — plus trip tips, halal food and the seasons.

Quick answer

Turkish citizens don't need a visa for South Korea for short visits, but they do need the electronic K-ETA before travelling, because Türkiye isn't on the temporary K-ETA exemption list that runs until 31 December 2026. The same broadly applies to Gulf citizens. The authorisation is valid for three years or until the passport expires, and the result usually comes within 72 hours. Syrians, Iraqis, Egyptians, Yemenis and other non-exempt nationals need a short-stay visa from the Korean embassy.

South Korea has become one of the Asian destinations our guests ask about most: Seoul and its palaces, Jeju Island, cherry-blossom season in spring, autumn colours, shopping, technology and Korean dramas. But the entry rules confuse many people between “visa-free”, “K-ETA” and “embassy visa”. This guide sorts them out for you by nationality.

The K-ETA isn't a visa

The authorisation is prior permission to travel, required of visa-exempt nationals. How long you can stay on each visit isn't set by its validity but by the exemption agreement for your nationality. The final decision on entry rests with the immigration officer at the airport.

The K-ETA step by step

  1. 1
The official website or app only

The Korean authorities have warned about unofficial sites that charge more than the official fee. We guide you, or apply for you through the official channel.

  2. 2
    Details and photo

Passport details, a recent photo, and information about your trip, accommodation and job.

  3. 3
    Paying the fee

    Online, when you apply.

  4. 4
    Waiting for the result

Usually within 72 hours, so apply enough days before you travel.

  5. 5
    Travel

The authorisation is tied to your passport number. If you renew your passport, you need a new authorisation.

ValidityThree years from approval (for authorisations since 3 July 2023), or until the passport expires if sooner

Arrival cardK-ETA holders are exempt from filling in the paper arrival card
RefusalThe application can be refused, in which case you need an embassy visa

The short-stay visa for non-exempt nationals

If your nationality isn't exempt, your route is a short-stay visa from the Korean embassy in Ankara or the consulate general in Istanbul, depending on jurisdiction and the instructions in force. The file is usually:

The file

  • A passport valid for long enough, with old passports
  • The application form and a recent photo
  • A valid Turkish residence permit
  • An employer letter and payslips, or your company documents
  • A bank statement for recent months
  • Flight and hotel bookings and an itinerary
  • An invitation if visiting a company or relative

What weakens the file

  • A bank statement with a sudden deposit
  • An unclear purpose
  • A Turkish residence permit about to expire
  • An itinerary with an illogical length
  • A previous refusal with no explanation

Previous travel to places like the Schengen area, Japan or the US strengthens the file. Preparing the documents is similar to what we explain in Schengen documents by employment status.

If your K-ETA is refused

A refusal doesn't mean a ban on entering Korea, only that visa-exempt travel wasn't accepted in your case. You then apply for a visit visa from the Korean embassy or consulate with a complete file explaining the purpose of your visit and your ties to your country of residence. Don't keep reapplying for the authorisation with the same details — it's better to identify the likely reason (inaccurate details, an unclear purpose, previous travel history) and address it.

Visit visa documents by situation

Your situationThe most important extra documents
EmployeeAn employer letter with position, salary and leave, and payslips
Business ownerTax and trade registry, activity certificate and company statements
StudentStudent certificate, parental sponsorship and their documents
Business visitThe Korean company's invitation and a letter from your company
Visiting a relativeThe relative's invitation and proof of their residence in Korea and your relationship

Jeju Island: a special rule

Korea runs a special programme for Jeju Island that allows citizens of a large number of countries to enter the island visa-free for a limited period when arriving on a direct flight, with a list of nationalities excluded from the programme and no onward travel to the Korean mainland. If Jeju is your only destination, ask us about your nationality — this route may be easier than an embassy visa.

Korea for Muslim families

The Seoul Central Mosque in Itaewon is the centre of Muslim life in the city, surrounded by halal restaurants and shops. Other cities, such as Busan, have mosques and prayer rooms. Korean Islamic bodies issue halal certificates to restaurants, so look for their sign. Major airports and shopping centres have prayer rooms, and the hijab is familiar and causes no problems.

Shopping and tax refunds

Korea is a strong shopping destination, from cosmetics to electronics and clothing. Tourists can reclaim part of the sales tax at participating shops under the conditions, or buy tax-free directly in some stores. Keep your receipts and passport with you while shopping.

Cases we see often

Composite examples based on questions we receive, not the stories of specific clients.

A Turkish family in cherry-blossom season

No visa, but a K-ETA for each person on their own passport. We applied a week before travel and booked a hotel near the metro in Seoul.

A Syrian engineer living in Istanbul

His nationality needs an embassy visa. We prepared his file with his employer letter, statements, Turkish residence permit and the invitation from the Korean company he's visiting.

A Saudi honeymoon couple

Visa-free with a K-ETA, and a programme combining Seoul and Jeju with halal restaurants at every stop.

An Egyptian student living in Türkiye

A short-stay visa from the embassy with her student certificate, parental sponsorship and a clear itinerary.

Tips for your trip to Korea

Flights

Direct flights from Istanbul to Seoul (Incheon) take about ten hours or more depending on the route, or there are connecting flights.

Best seasons

Spring (cherry blossoms around April) and autumn (colourful trees in October) are the most beautiful. Summer is hot, humid and rainy, and winter very cold.

Halal food

There are many halal restaurants around the Central Mosque in Itaewon, Seoul, and Muslim-friendly restaurants are growing in the tourist cities.

Getting around

The Seoul metro is excellent, and high-speed trains link the major cities. A transport card makes everything easier.

Internet

Excellent networks, with tourist SIMs or pocket Wi-Fi available on arrival.

Payment

Cards are accepted almost everywhere; carry a little cash for traditional markets.

Arriving at Incheon Airport

After immigration and customs you have three ways into Seoul: the airport express train to Seoul Station, airport buses that stop near the major hotels in the main districts, and taxis from the official ranks. With family and lots of luggage, we arrange a private pick-up for you. Buy a transport card at the airport — it works on the metro, buses and in some shops.

Apps you'll need in Korea

Maps

Google Maps has limited navigation inside Korea, and locals use more accurate local map apps for walking and public transport, so download one before you go.

Translation

Camera translation apps are very useful for menus and signs, as many are in Korean only.

Taxis

Local taxi apps are widespread and make it easy to deal with a driver without a shared language.

Halal restaurants

Apps and websites list halal and Muslim-friendly restaurants in every city.

The weather month by month

PeriodWeatherTip
March to MayMild spring and cherry blossomsThe most beautiful time — book early for blossom season
June to AugustHot, humid and the rainy seasonAn umbrella and light clothes; Jeju and the beaches are crowded
September to NovemberPleasant autumn and colourful treesOne of the best times for walks and the mountains
December to FebruaryVery cold, sometimes snowyHeavy winter clothes; the ski resorts are open

A suggested one-week plan

  1. 1
    Seoul: palaces and history

Gyeongbokgung Palace, the traditional Bukchon village and Insadong street.

  2. 2
    Modern Seoul

Gangnam, N Seoul Tower and shopping in Myeongdong.

  3. 3
    A day outside Seoul

A trip to Nami Island or the DMZ on an organised tour.

  4. 4
    Busan

By high-speed train: beaches, the colourful Gamcheon village and the fish market.

  5. 5
    Jeju Island

By domestic flight: nature, waterfalls and beaches.

Common mistakes

Do

  • Apply for the K-ETA through the official channel only
  • Apply enough days before you travel
  • Make sure the passport number on the authorisation is your travel passport
  • Carry your hotel booking and return ticket
  • Check the temporary exemption list and its end date

Avoid

  • Paying unofficial sites that imitate the Korean website
  • Travelling on a new passport with an authorisation on the old one
  • Confusing the authorisation's validity with the length of stay
  • Leaving the visa application to the last minute if you're not exempt
  • Working on an authorisation or visit visa

Frequently asked questions

Do Turkish citizens need a visa for South Korea?

No visa is needed for short visits under the exemption agreement between the two countries, but a K-ETA electronic travel authorisation is needed before travel, because Türkiye isn't on the temporary K-ETA exemption list that runs until 31 December 2026.

What is the K-ETA?

An electronic travel authorisation that South Korea requires of visa-exempt nationals before boarding. It isn't a visa but prior permission to travel, and it's applied for only on the official website or app.

How long is the K-ETA valid?

Three years from approval for authorisations issued since 3 July 2023, or until the passport expires if that's sooner. The length of each stay isn't set by the authorisation's validity but by the exemption agreement for your nationality.

How long does the K-ETA take?

The result usually appears within 72 hours of completing the application, but apply enough days before travel in case of a request for clarification or a refusal.

Do Saudi or Emirati citizens need a visa for Korea?

Gulf citizens are visa-exempt for short visits under each country's agreement, and need a K-ETA unless their country is on the temporary exemption list, which doesn't include the Gulf states as of this update.

Who needs a visa from the Korean embassy?

Citizens of non-exempt countries, including many Arab nationalities such as Syrian, Iraqi, Egyptian and Yemeni, need a short-stay visa from the Korean embassy in Ankara or the consulate general in Istanbul if they live in Türkiye.

Does an approved K-ETA guarantee entry?

No. The K-ETA is permission to travel; the final entry decision rests with the immigration officer on arrival, so carry your hotel booking, return ticket and proof of the purpose of your visit.

Does Google Maps work in Korea?

Partly, but its navigation is limited inside Korea, and locals use more accurate local map apps for walking and public transport. Download one before you travel.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

Spring for the cherry blossoms, and autumn for the colourful trees and pleasant weather. Summer is hot, humid and rainy, and winter is very cold but suits snow and ski lovers.

How do I get from Incheon Airport to Seoul?

By the airport express train to Seoul Station, by airport buses that stop near the major hotels, by taxi from the official ranks, or by a private pick-up we arrange for you.

What do I do if my K-ETA is refused?

A refusal doesn't bar you from Korea, but you then need a visit visa from the Korean embassy or consulate with a complete file. Don't keep reapplying for the authorisation with the same details without addressing the likely reason.

Can I enter Jeju Island without a visa?

Korea runs a special programme for Jeju that lets citizens of many countries enter visa-free for a limited period on a direct flight to the island, with a list of excluded nationalities and no onward travel to the mainland. We check your nationality before booking.

Do I need a new K-ETA if I renew my passport?

Yes. The authorisation is tied to the passport number, so if you renew your passport you need a new authorisation before travelling.

Is there halal food in South Korea?

Yes, especially in Seoul around the Central Mosque in Itaewon, and the number of halal-certified or Muslim-friendly restaurants is growing in the tourist cities.
